My name is Marley, and this is my blog! I am a senior integrated marketing communication major with a minor in professional Spanish at Slippery Rock University. When I’m on campus you can find me pretending to do homework in the library, or working in the admissions office giving campus tours. In my free time I like to watch movies, read books and pet dogs. One of my goals for this year is to learn to play the piano, just for fun.
My experience with journalism is a little rocky. My senior year of high school I really wanted to be a journalist and planned on studying journalism in college. This was the plan until I job shadowed with local journalist who shall not be named. The experience I had was not what I was expecting at all, and really turned me off of journalism. However, I still have a love of writing, and I am hopeful that this class will redeem news writing in my mind. Journalists seem like they are under a lot of pressure, and I am curious how it will be to have a sliver of that pressure put on myself for this class. I think the aspect I will struggle with most is determining what is actually newsworthy, mostly because what I consider interesting is not always what everyone else would consider interesting. My biggest hope for this class is that it forces me to pay more attention to the news. I get 95% of my information from Twitter, and that definitely needs to change.
When I’m not scrolling through Twitter, the most likely news source I would check is The Washington Post. It is a legacy media outlet that I trust, and one that my dad reads every day, so it feels like home to me. I feel like an actual adult when I read The Washington Post, and it forces me to pay attention to the news I would rather ignore like politics, and other depressing issues. As a shallow millennial I only care about pop culture news from sites like The A.V. Club. Although owned by The Onion, it’s not a satirical news source, and posts current pop culture news relating primarily to television, film, music and books (all my favorite things). It features a “What to watch and read this week” section that helps me find new content to add to my list.
