Learning When To Say Yes - A Biography On SRU Success Story Dallas Kline

Dallas Kline, 22, of Spring Grove, PA, started at Slippery Rock University in 2015 as an undergraduate sport management major.

Dallas chose to attend Slippery Rock due to its affordability, the programs and the many opportunities available.

Dallas discusses how she personally found success at Slippery Rock University.

Originally, Dallas had planned to major in political science for her undergraduate degree which is no surprise given her degree of involvement with the Student Government Association. At the time, she thought that she wanted to go to school to become a lawyer, but that plan was foiled by her hate of high school mock trials. When Dallas later heard of the sport management program at Slippery Rock, it seemed to be the perfect fit.

“Sports are something that my family bonded over so I am very passionate about them,” Dallas said. “Sport management fits with my personality so it seemed like a good match.”

Dallas’ success in the sport management department confirms that it was the right choice for her. Not only was she the president of the Sport Management Alliance, the Sport Management Student of the Year 2019, but also received the Outstanding Student for Scholarly Activity Award for her senior year sport management research project.

“I’d like to think of Dallas as my mentee, my protege of the sport management department” Dr. Brian Crow, head of the sport management department, said about his relationship with Dallas.

Dallas, a recent 2019 graduate, is now pursuing graduate school at Slippery Rock University with a major in student affairs in higher education. The student affairs in higher education track was a natural progression for Dallas due to her experiences as a Community Assistant in the Honors college Living Learning Community, her roles in the Student Government Association, working with the First-Year Leader Scholar Program and working as a campus pride guide at Slippery Rock’s undergraduate admissions office.

“I chose student affairs in higher education because all of the experiences I have had here that shaped me into a leader sort built me up to it,” Kline said. “I want to be able to help future students in the way that Slippery Rock has helped me.”

During her undergraduate career, Dallas Kline accomplished a long list of impressive things. Not only was she president of the Sport Management Alliance and Colleges Against Cancer, but also the Student Government Association president. She was on homecoming court and worked as a campus pride guide. She has received many awards and titles such as Senior Woman of the Year from the Alumni Association, the Outstanding Student Leader Award from the college of business and more.

As much as it may seem, it was not always smooth sailing for Dallas. Like for anyone, there are challenges that come with pursuing an education, being away from home and feeling overwhelmed.

As a first generation college student, Dallas had to figure out a lot of life lessons as she went along. She was unsure how to deal with the FAFSA, tuition and leases on her own.

One of her biggest challenges during her undergrad was biting off more than she could chew.

“I have a hard time saying no and I was getting overwhelmed from trying to do too much,” Dallas said. “Especially during my junior year, I had to learn when to say no to myself and others.”

Dallas also said that experienced homesickness during her transitional freshman year.

“When it was time for me to move in I cried the entire 5 hour drive here,” Dallas said. “It was difficult because I was used to knowing so many people in high school and then suddenly I knew no one. But once I got involved with SGA it helped me to overcome that feeling.”

Despite accomplishing so much in only four years, there are still many things Dallas plans to accomplish after graduation.

Looking back, Dallas also had some words of encouragement that she wish she could have told her younger self.

Dallas is a well-known figure of the Slippery Rock community who has contributed just as much, if not more, than she has gained during her time here. A true SRU success story, it is impossible to imaginable what she will be able to accomplish next.
